The defining characteristic of capitalism is that the means of production and its distribution are owned and controlled by individual citizens, while the defining characteristic of Socialism, is that the State owns and/or controls them.
For over a century these terms, what they mean, who is who, have been conflated, misrepresented, ,misunderstood, misused, and manipulated for propaganda and rhetorical purposes, to the point even Economists no longer knows what they mean, let alone the average voter.
The term "Capitalism" is Marxist smear aimed at the enlightenment social system premised upon Individual Rights. Rights are protected by objective rule of law (a proper govt). A proper govt is a paid servant whose job is to protect individual rights. The most ethical socio economic system to have ever occurred in all of human history
